Our Story

A small firm
with a particular
point of view.

Our firm is built around a simple belief: money is only worth something when it makes your life better.

It’s an idea that shapes how we work, who we work with, and the conversations we have every day — and it’s one that goes back further than the firm itself. Here’s where it began.

Why we
see money
differently

Buena Vista started with something our founder, AK Mashhoon, noticed as a kid.

Growing up, he watched one side of his family struggle financially while the other made a lot of money. And from where he stood, the people with money didn’t seem any happier than the people without it.

That stuck with him. He’d grown up hearing that wealth could fix everything, but he had a clear window into another life where it plainly hadn’t. Learning that early changed how he saw everything after, and it’s the idea Buena Vista is built on.

Meet the team

We’re a small team on purpose. It means we know our clients well, we answer our own phones, and we get to work with people we genuinely like. Get to know us a little — then come say hello.

AK Mashhoon

AK Mashhoon TPCP®, CFP®, CRPS®

Founder, Financial Advisor

Hi, I’m Abduhl Karim Mashhoon, but you can call me AK. I’m the founder of Buena Vista, which I started in 2024 to chase a passion I picked up as a young adult. As a kid I noticed the people in my family with more money didn’t seem any happier for it. That question — what money is really for — has followed me ever since.

Patrick Rivers

Patrick Rivers CFP®, AAMS®

Financial Advisor

Hello, I’m Patrick. I’d like to believe I was named after the patron saint of Ireland, but it’s more likely my mom just liked the sound of it. I’ve collected a few nicknames over the years, but Patrick is the one that gets my attention across a crowded room. Some have tried “Pat.” Few have lived to tell the tale.

Brianna Shealey

Brianna Shealey WMS℠, AAMS®, CRPC®, AWMA®

Financial Advisor

Hi y’all! I’m Brianna Shealey, a Georgia peach who loves helping people make the most of what they have to build the life they dream about. I’ve had a passion for financial planning since I was a kid, though I didn’t call it that back then. I was just fascinated by how the financial system worked and the amazing things people could do with money.

Shari Kinney

Operations Specialist

Sometimes the best careers begin with an unexpected opportunity. After growing up in Woodridge, Illinois, I accepted what was supposed to be a temporary receptionist position at a local brokerage firm. The more I learned about investing, financial planning, and the financial markets, though, the more fascinated I became. That curiosity launched a career in financial services that has now spanned over 35 years.

The team
behind our team

Running an independent firm well takes more than the four of us.

Behind the scenes, we’re supported by NewEdge Advisors, our Registered Investment Advisor. They’re the people who handle things like infrastructure, compliance, operations, and more, so we can spend our time where it matters most: with you. It’s part of how a small, independent practice delivers the depth and rigor of a much larger one.
